Little Giants

The Golden State Warriors are my heroes this year. The 8th seed facing the 1st seed Mavericks, the Warriors have taken a 3-1 lead in the series and look poised to advance. Undersized and often outmatched, they make up for their deficiencies with hustle. That is admirable in its own right.

Spongebob No pants

The biggest fear I have about practicing on my own straight out of law school is the lack of practical knowledge i have. This is a very controversial area of law academia right now. For some reason the schools have mounted a fairly successful defense against teaching law students practical skills that might enable them to practice straight after the bar. While practical curriculum is being taught at more schools each year, the emphasis remains on theory. In fact, the only schools emphasizing practical experience are poorly ranked which doesnt make the least bit of sense.

The solution: either make practical courses 30-50% of the curriculum or allow students to gain practical experience during the school year in addition to the jobs and externships they take as a matter of course.

Query

Is getting caught reading your own blog the same as when a celebrity gets caught reading tabloids about themselves?

Dont mess with a Sicilian when death is on the line

I am done with law school classes forever. People keep asking me how it feels. There's really only one way to describe it. Like warm apple pie.

When i get that feeling...

Today is my last law school class ever. I'm kinda happy about that. Three years of hard work and im finally closer to achieving my goals. While the tension around the library has been rising considerably, I have been lucky to surround myself with the less stressed out students. Yesterday, a student turned the ringer on his cell phone on high and put his phone in another student's backpack. Then the student had someone call his phone. You can imagine the embarassment of the other student when the silence of the library was pierced by the sweet lyrics to sexual healing. The entire library broke out in applause. Yeah, its the little things that count.

McCreeperson

I love how the creepy guys have made practically every woman incapable of making eye contact in public places. Initially i thought that reaction was unfounded and extreme. Then I had a dude look at me like i was the last filet mignon at Ruth Chris' on a Saturday night. Now i completely understand.

Random

I've thought long and hard about this. Right now I'm 75% sure that im going to start up a small partnership after law school and give it a go. I'm a businessman at heart and dont like waiting to be spoon fed my miserable assignments, which seems to be the type of work any associate gets at a firm. This isnt a case of the grass being greener, its a case of logic. If im going to put in long hours, I want them to be for myself. Sure, there are risks. Many of them, in fact. I'm probably going to have to take out another loan to cover the start up costs. I dont have any clients. Yet. I do, however, have unbridled ambition that has found its proper calling.

I might fail, but it wont be for a lack of trying. And either way, I will look forward to getting up in the morning and going to work, something most people will never say in their lifetime.

Numb

I have mixed feelings about showing the Virginia Tech Killer's video on the news. On one hand, the public has the right to know what's going on. On the other, society also has an interest in deterring notorious crimes. Would the same number of crimes such as these happen if the killer's knew they wouldnt get any airtime?

Get your F'ing eyes checked.

So apparently the ammunition belt was actually a belt made to look like ammunition. They locked down the school for this. Quite crappily i might add.

In other news, a man dressed in a tuxedo t-shirt was allowed entrance to the school's formal-attire-only judicial library.

Guns without Roses

I dont have time to write a post that does the recent tradgedy in Virginia justice. I do, however, want to stimulate some conversation on gun laws and protection in the US.

One on hand, countries that ban guns entirely have a lot less violence. Look at Japan, they've had 50 shootings in one year. 50! There's more than fifty in Portland a month.

On the other hand, the constitution grants Americans the right to bear arms.

So where is the middle ground?

You have to fight fire with fire if you plan on winning. People need to be educated and trained on the proper use of guns. This would reduce the stigma attached to gun ownership and encourage honest, law abiding citizens to carry heat.

Also, institutions that have thousands of people, such as universities, need to have more properly trained armed people on campus. We need more security guards by the hundreds. The schools CAN afford this. If the mall can, a private school charging 30k in tuition can. Public schools can get funding as well. The money isnt the issue though. Americans dont like to admit that we are weak.

Criminals carry guns and frequently use them. So why not the general public? Think about it.

You're just a widdle guy

There's a new public service campaign asking parents to ensure their kids sit in a child's car seat until they're 4'9''. Wow. That would have been 8th grade for me. Maybe kids these days do have it rough...

The irony is that his hair is really F'ing bad.

The whole Imus controversy is sad. Not so much for him, or even the women of the Rutgers basketball team. The real losers in the situation are the beneficiaries of the various charities Imus conducted. A good example of losing the forest in the trees. Think about it.

At last, At last

After three months and a lot of grief, ive finally finished by graduation paper. It was so big in fact that I couldnt slip it under my teacher's door to turn it in, proving that size really does matter.

Its not a pie hole

You Are a Glazed Donut

Okay, you know that you're plain - and you're cool with that.

You prefer not to let anything distract from your sweetness.

Your appeal is understated yet universal. Everyone dig you.

And in a pinch, you'll probably get eaten.

The Fuzz

Policeman testifies in court............

Q: "Officer -- did you see my client fleeing the scene?"

A: "No sir. But I subsequently observed a person matching the description of the offender, running several blocks away."

Q: "Officer -- who provided this description?"

A: "The officer who responded to the scene."

Q: "A fellow officer provided the description of this so-called offender. Do you trust your fellow officers?"

A: "Yes, sir. With my life."

Q: "With your life? Let me ask you this then officer. Do you have a room where you change your clothes in preparation for your daily duties?"

A: "Yes sir, we do!"

Q: "And do you have a locker in the room?"

A: "Yes sir, I do."

Q: "And do you have a lock on your locker?"

A: "Yes sir."

Q: "Now why is it, officer, if you trust your fellow officers with your life, you find it necessary to lock your locker in a room you share with these same officers?"

A: "You see, sir -- we share the building with the court complex, and sometimes lawyers have been known to walk through that room."

The courtroom erupted in laughter, and a prompt recess was called.

If your gonna mess with the king's queens, you better watch your Ace, Jack.

Two days in a row I have awoken from the same dream only to find that I have one minute before my alarm clock goes off. Coupled with the fact that it is nice outside and im sitting in class right now and im plum for the picking.

To top it off, my horoscope (sent from a friend, because real men dont check their horoscopes) is pretty harsh today.

"Saggitarius: You may be hard and cold when it comes to the facts, dear Sagittarius. You may come across as tough and rather harsh, but in reality, this is often just a mask to hide your sensitive insides. Perhaps you are actually insecure about what you feel and how you express yourself. People may never know this about you because you are so good at showing only the strong-willed, electric side of your personality. Be careful of being too stingy of yourself with others."

Ouch. Its pretty much true. And for the record, i wont be stingy with others if they pay for my time.

PS. happy birthday Marissa.

Tuesdays are for lovers

For those people that have lost complete faith in the government, consider that the FCC just declined the request to allow cell phone use on planes. Perhaps the FCC should be in charge of this country.

Roo-fie-O!

Reason #1,392 I will never move to Philadelphia: When intoxicated and ordering a philly cheese steak sandwich, my selection of "the wiz" on my sandwich was apparently not what I thought it was. Perhaps a few onions, maybe a smidge of some peppers like the city of Brotherly Love is known for was in order.

No sir, in the alternate city of brotherly love (SF), there was no abundance of "the works" this guy thought he was ordering. I would have even been amused if the place hired a midget to pee on my sandwich, thus making my sandwich's name all the more relevant. Much to my chagrin, however, and only after I had devoured the footlong, did i come to find out that the gelatinous mucous-like coating on the meat was in fact, cheez wiz. The more you know...

She's got a ticket to ride

Break was good. Too much stuff to tell here. Here's an issue heavily debated among law students. When does a law student become a lawyer? Upon law school graduation or after passing the bar? Discuss.
